Fabrication

Vinyl building products, including patio covers, fencing and gates are usually created by fabricating and assembling various profiles into a useable end product.  Fabrication is a critical element in creating a fence that is strong, good looking, and long lasting. Fabrication includes advanced design, cutting, routing, drilling, reinforcing, and assembly of the finish product.

The designs created for for fabricaion must be high quality and specifically address the expansion, contraction, and environmental variables experienced over many years in real world use.

An important tool in proper fabrication is the computer numeric controlled (CNC) routing machine.  Good tools allow the products to be made to work well in actual field conditions.

Common parts

Posts
Posts are the main vertical structural supports of a patio cover that are attached to the ground and support the beams, rafters, and lattice or picket top.  Posts may be set into the ground in a concrete footings, or if properly engineered, may be attached using a variety of other methods.

Beams
Beams are the horizontal members that usually go between the posts and support the rafters.  Beams should be attached to the post internally using an engineered connection system.  Different beam sizes and designs are available, depending on application and requirement.

Rafters
Rafters usually span from the home to the beam, and create the platform which holds the shade pickets, lattice, louvers, or solid top.

Pickets or Lattice
Pickets are the horizontal members that create the desired shade. They can be mounted to the top of the rafters, routed into purlins between the rafters.  Again, there are many sizes available.

Other alternative building products

  • Composites

Composites are typically extrusions made from a mix (composite) of various plastics and a natural fiber like wood, or other grains, hulls, or fibers. They are usually solid, and therefore much heavier than typical hollow vinyl fences and other building products.

Some composites are now extruded with a vinyl cap-stock, as vinyl has among the best weathering characteristics of the available alternative products.

Other engineered polymers

There are other types of polymers used as well, including polyethylene (both high and low density), polypropylene, and polystyrene.  Each has a set of advantages, disadvantages, and proper techniques for proper use.
